Accommodation
The
house has been completely renovated.
It is light and spacious with exposed old oak beams throughout, in keeping
with the Béarnaise style. Where possible we have presered the original
features of which there are many.
Upstairs:
In all the 3 bedrooms the comfortable beds all have new mattresses,
quality linens and summer duvets. Extra blankets and throws are available
during winter months and there are radiators in all of the rooms.
All the bedrooms have windows with views, the rear bedroom overlooks our beautiful
rambling gardens and neighbouring chateau grounds. The two front bedrooms
overlooking the pretty village of Méritein.
Shower room:
The walk-in shower room has a large modern shower system, spotlights, tiling
throughout and a unique pebble floor created from local stone. It also has
a heated towel rail, modern washbasin and W.C.
Downstairs:
The Kitchen is large and traditional and as you would expect in France, the
heart of the house. It has fitted cupboards, white ceramic 'Butler' sink and
family-sized double gas oven with gas hob. There is a fridge and plenty of
worksurfaces to create delicious meals.
The large fireplace houses a wood burning 'Godin' stove and has all the tools
to light and tend the fire. There is a dry wood store in the garden.
A grand farm table which easily accommodates 6 people sits in the centre of
the room with chairs for all. A comprehensive selection of crockery,
cutlery, and glassware for 6 people is provided.
The kitchen is well stocked with all the utensils, cookware and tools that
an enthusiastic cook requires. It also includes extra items such as a microwave,
'Senseo' coffee machine, food processor, liquidiser and pasta machine.
Utility Room:
In the separate utility room which leads onto the terrace and garden, there
is a washing machine, dishwasher, sink and fridge-freezer. An ironing
board, laundry basket and other laundry items are also provided.
Next to the kitchen is the downstairs cloakroom with W.C. and washbasin.
Lounge:
With double french doors, the lounge is the room to relax in, with a view
of the outside terrace and the garden beyond. It has a 3 seater sofa and
two arm chairs, TV, DVD and music system/CD player.
There is a large sideboard and bookcase with plenty of guide books and information
about the area, books and games to keep you busy.
There is another woodburning stove in here should you wish to use it.
The Garden and Terrace:
This house used to be the gatehouse to the chateau next door and we are able
to observe and enjoy the wildlife of the chateau grounds with red squirrels,
deer, birds and other wildlife daily visitors to our garden. Each day at about
5pm you can watch the local shepherd leading his flock of local breed 'Brebis'
sheep, on his way home. The main garden is laid to lawn, with colourful mature
flowerbeds, rambling wisteria , interesting shrubs and spectacular trees, one
of which is a giant 200 year old 'Magnolia grandiflora'. There is
an organic kitchen garden with vegetables, salads, herbs and soft fruits, which
you are welcome to sample - subject to availability.
