Fishing
Fishing is a big tourist attraction in this area, as it is called the 'Béarn
des Gaves' (rivers being locally known as 'Gaves') and Navarrenx is the self-styled
'capitale de la peche du saumon en France'. Apart from being able to catch
world class salmon, there are brown, rainbow and sea trout, as well as barbel
and black bass. Permits are needed, but these can be bought from Navarrenx
at 'Le Poisson
Roy'. A tourist permit for 15 days can be bought
for about 30 euros.
There is also a local 'guide de pêche' at a nearby mill, Moulin
de Susmiou who can take you for a half day or a day's fly fishing
tuition. La Conciergerie is five minutes walk down a back path to a small 'beach'
on the banks of the Gave d'Oloron, where, if you are not a fisherman, you can
always have a picnic or barbecue. We'd be happy to recommend places to fish
nearby (not that you're guaranteed to catch anything of course!).
The lakes in the Pyrénées mountains are a beautiful backdrop in which to fish.
You can catch brown trout, rainbow trout, 'L'Omble Chevalier, introduced into
the lakes in the 1930s, a relative of the salmon, also brook trout and 'Cristivomer'
or grey trout, again introduced here in the 1950s. Here is an excellent website
devoted to the lakes: Lakes
